“Monumental.” It’s a word that Vermont potter Stephen Procter often uses to describe his three-to-five-foot-

tall elegant stoneware garden vessels. And for good reason. As he speaks from his expansive workshop in a former textile

mill in Brattleboro, he explains that his oversize pots, thanks to both their stature and execution, can “transform a space,

intrigue onlookers, invite contemplation, and even inspire”

by their mere presence in a garden or landscape.

A few days in Vermont working at scale—exploring form, process, and the quiet value of learning together in the studio.

I’ll be exhibiting at the Paradise City Arts Festival this May, in Northampton. You’ll find me at Booth 7.

I’ll be showing a group of large ceramic vessels. The focus remains on form, proportion, and how a piece holds its presence in space. These are not new concerns for me, but each body of work moves the question forward in small ways.

There were so many beautiful and impressive pieces made by students in my most recent workshop.

I usually encourage students not to get too attached to their practice pieces, but this time, the work was simply too good to recycle. Every piece reflected so much creativity, effort, and growth, and it was such a joy to see what everyone created.

The March 11–15 workshop here in Brattleboro was one of those weeks that reminds me why I continue teaching these small group sessions. There were seven students this time, which turned out to be just the right number. Small enough that everyone had space to work at their own pace, but large enough to create that shared momentum that makes the studio feel alive.

A Quiet Conversation Between Indoors and Out: A friend and collector in upstate New York recently welcomed three of my vessels into his home. Seeing them in a new setting revealed how their tones and forms quietly bridge the interior space with the winter landscape outside, softening the architecture and creating a gentle sense of openness in the colder months.
